Seven Supplements for Longevity

Everyone wants to live a long healthy life and itís no secret that what we put in our bodies can have a direct effect on how many years we get out of our bodies. While there is no substitute for a healthy diet and a weekly exercise routine, there are certain supplements that scientific studies show could extend our lifespan. Remember to always consult your physician before beginning any supplement regimen.

Fish Oil: Supplements made from fish body oils contain long-chain omega-3 fatty acids that aid brain function and overall brain health. These oils contain DHA and EPA - two essential components for the proper functioning of the brain. Over time, taking fish oil can increase brain power, which can lead to better concentration, increased creativity and improved memory.

Selenium: This is a potent antioxidant that contains real cancer fighting properties. Recent studies showed that selenium helped cut cancer occurrences by almost 40% and decreased the cancer death rate by 50% in those who took 200 mcg of selenium every day over a four year period.  Another study shows that selenium helped reduce incidences of lung cancer, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer.

Green Tea: Scientific research is providing hard evidence for the health benefits long associated with drinking green tea.  Recent results of an epidemiological study indicate that drinking green tea can reduce the risk of esophageal cancer in men and women by nearly sixty percent. There is also research indicating that green tea can lower overall cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.

Garlic: For centuries people have used Garlic to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. Garlic contains the chemicals alliin and allinase. These two chemicals combine to produce allicin ó which is the main ingredient in garlic.  Allicin is said to be is responsible for providing significant support for heart health.

Low Dose Aspirin: While itís been in our medicine cabinet for years, few people realized how effective aspirin was in maintaining heart health. It is now proven that aspirin can lower the risk of heart attack in people who have coronary artery disease.  Those who take blood thinners or diabetes should avoid an aspirin regimen, unless reccommended by their doctor.

Resveratrol: Resveratrol is made by plants to help to protect them from environmental stresses.  Some researchers believe that resveratrol might be the main ingredient in red wine that helps prevent damage to blood vessels and reduces "bad" cholesterol.  Studies are now being done to see if resveratrol could help patients with diabetes, obesity and heart disease.

CoQ10: This supplement is essential to the production of cellular energy and is concentrated in the myocardium, or heart muscle.  In dozens of clinical trails, those given CoQ10 had dramatically reduced heart failure symptoms including congestive heart failure.
