What is Collagen?

Collagen is a fibrous protein that's used in many parts of our body to provide strength, structure, and some degree of elasticity – including skin, hair, nails, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. It's comprised by over 1,000 amino acids, and our ability to synthesize it ourselves peaks at age 25 and degrades by about 1.5% a year thereafter, even with adequate protein in our diet, and factors like smoking or high sugar intake can worsen matters.

In addition to helping reduce joint pain associated with osteoarthritis and staving off the visible effects of aging such as sagging or wrinkles, other benefits of hydrolyzed collagen can include helping the liver remove toxins (due to the high glycine content), and reducing the chance of lean muscle tissue loss by maintaining nitrogen balance.

Two Types of Hydrolyzed Collagen - Top Quality - True Pure

Most products in the market use either mainly bovine collagen or chicken bone broth collagen with varying degrees of absorbability (chicken bone broth is not hydrolyzed collagen) oriented to helping either the bones or the cartilage and joints with Type II collagen; OR a hydrolyzed marine type oriented to helping the skin, hair, nails and gums with Types I & III Collagen.

Ultra Low Molecular Weight

"Collagen" is the name for the different types (with Types I and III Collagen accounting for the vast majority) of fibrous proteins which help provide the structure for many parts of our bodies. This includes not only the skin, hair, and nails (which begin to sag and wrinkle or become dry and brittle as the levels decrease), but also blood vessels, muscles, joints, and even bones. We produce them from the amino acids which we normally get from the protein in our diets, but if our diet or digestive processes are deficient, we can benefit from a supplementary source, especially since our ability to replenish collagen diminishes with age.

Other collagen supplements offering predominantly Types I and III Collagen are often sourced from bovine/cattle hides, but they tend to come in larger molecules, making them more difficult to absorb than highly bioavailable marine sources, requiring you to take twice as much a day. Similarly, not all marine sources are alike: some are made from the fish's skin (which is more likely to contain allergens, toxins and pollutants), rather than from their scales. And many products are sourced from fish farms, which tend to be raised with antibiotics and hormones; and some still have a relatively high molecular weight (say, 2000 Daltons).

In contrast, the Marine Collagen in this Multi Collagen+ Formula comes only from the scales of wild-caught deep ocean fish. These scales are treated with enzymes to break them down into tiny protein fragments called peptides - small enough to be absorbed efficiently into the bloodstream where they can be transported to the skin, hair, nails and other areas which need to produce more collagen. Tru Pure's marine collagen peptides are just 500 Daltons in size - small enough to be absorbed by the skin. And to further assist with collagen formation and to help strengthen the hair and nails, this ultra low molecular weight marine collagen has been fortified with several complementary ingredients: Vitamin C; Silica, and Biotin.

Then, to provide support for the other types of collagen in your body which also diminish with age, especially the cartilage in your joints, TruPure Multi-Collagen+ also adds the two key ingredients from their related product, TruPure BioActive Collagen Plus MSM, to provide Type II collagen derived from chicken sternums. These have also been hydrolyzed or processed down to a relatively small molecular weight to increase their absorption into the bloodstream: 1100 Daltons, which is about one third of the size of many Type 2 Collagen brands.
