Vitamin D is normally produced in your skin by exposure to adequate levels of sunlight, but for many people, that only really happens during the summer months. It is an important hormone in the body not only to keep bones, teeth, and muscles healthy and to help control the body's levels of calcium and phosphate, but it also appears to have immune-regulatory effects.

Product Notes:

Vitamin D deficiencies are implicated in a number of health problems, including loss of bone density, chronic fatigue, mood changes, muscle weakness, and immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMID), so supplementation is recommended, especially after the summer months (or even throughout the year, if not very much of your skin gets exposed to the sun even in the summer or it's always covered with a lot of sunscreen). Those with a history of osteoporotic fractures, increased risk for falls, or a diagnosis of osteoporosis, ovary or breast cancer, or of course a vitamin D deficiency are especially encouraged to seek supplementation. In addition, supplementation during pregnancy is associated with improved offspring vitamin D sufficiency status, improved fetal linear growth, and reduced fetal or neonatal mortality.

Vitamin D deficiency has also been associated with migraine headaches, and there are some suggestions in the scientific literature that supplements might decrease their frequency.
