Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) root extract has been traditionally used in herbal medicine to help relieve abdominal pain, soothe burning sensations in the stomach or intestinal tracts, and improve GI conditions like gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining).

Product Notes:

DGL works by stimulating their natural protective factors to support a healthy mucosal lining. It's also recommended for acid reflux or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Note on DGL by Nathan Zassman

DGL has been shown be helpful for the natural treatment of GERD (acid reflux, also called heartburn). Normally, licorice is high in glycyrrhizin, the sweet (30-50 times sweeter than sugar) component in licorice, which has healing properties. Glycyrrhizin has been used in the treatment of hepatitis and cirrhosis in Japan, may inhibit liver cell injury caused by the exposure to chemicals, and may be effective in inactivating the herpes simplex virus and other viruses. But glycyrrhizin when consumed in excess can cause water retention and loss of potassium and calcium, and is contraindicated for those with hypertension. For this reason, people who consume too much licorice candy (usually black licorice), or who use licorice with the glycyrrhizin not removed, can be at risk for hypertension. Licorice candy does not have the glycyrrhizin removed.

When the glycyrrhizin is removed, it is called DGL, the abbreviation for Deglycyrrhinizated Licorice. DGL can be effective in the treatment of acid reflux, and health professionals skilled and knowledgeable in natural medicine routinely prescribe DGL to heal the esophageal lining, and often to remedy the symptoms of acid reflux (heartburn). For DGL to be effective it needs to be chewed and mixed with saliva.
