Himalaya Herbal Healthcare: The Power of Ayurvedic Medicine
Rachel Tessier, Graduate Dietitian
Originating in India over 4,000 years ago, the word “Ayurveda” is the combination of the Sanskrit words “ayur” (life) and “veda” (science); therefore, its translation means “the science of life”. The foundation of Ayurvedic medicine encompasses a holistic approach to healing the whole being; mind, body, and soul. It is believed that Ayurvedic medicine is based on the wisdom that was handed down by Greek Gods as they had an avid eye for perceiving, interpreting and understanding human behaviors.
There are three main texts in Ayurvedic medicine that were written in the Sanskrit language more than 2,000 years ago, “Caraka Sambita”, “Sushruta Samhita”, and “Astanga Hridaya”, which are known as the Great Trilogy. According to these ancient texts, the science of Ayurvedic medicine uses the belief that every individual has three interconnected bodily states: “Vata” meaning air and ether (promotes motion), “Pitta” meaning fire and water (promotes heat, appetite, and digestion) and “Kapha” meaning earth and water (supports water and bodily fluids). It is believed that chronic diseases manifest in individuals when there is an imbalance of these three states in the body.
Ayurvedic medicine strives to use flowers, herbs, roots, stems, and leaves to restore and maintain homeostasis in the body. However, just as the three states are interdependent in the body, external influences, such as shifts in the environment, work, and society, are equally interconnected to each individual and their overall state health. With this in mind, Ayurvedic medicine traditionally uses a variety of herbs, diet, exercise as well as healthful lifestyle recommendations that are tailored to each unique individual as a way of healing the being in its entirety.
