“We know true wellness means using the best ingredients, making products that actually make a difference to people's health and, wherever possible, making healthy stuff taste great.”
The Barlean's family businesses began in the early 1970s, when their patriarch, Dave, a former pipe fitter, took up wild salmon fishing in the San Juan Islands off Washington State using his own design of a catamaran-style boats along with live holding tanks to do the reef-netting in a more ecologically friendly and quality- retaining way, and his wife Barb and their extended family opened and ran both a processing plant and a sales and distribution center for that and other seafood products. Some years later, their adult son Bruce became interested in an alternate source of Omega-3 fatty acids - flax oil - and enlisted Dave to devise a better way of extracting the oil out of the flaxseed by pressing it without heat, to produce a superior flavour. They subsequently expanded their product line to also include other types of oils, as well as green food concentrates and other premium supplements. Barlean's is a socially responsible company which contributes a significant portion of their profits to the Autism Hope Alliance and a number of international children's organizations.
