"Sitting is the new smoking," they say. Many of us slouch as we sit passively in regular seats with backs, which can lead to neck, back and shoulder pain, or even weight gain and joint problems. A Stability Chair, on the other hand, requires active sitting with a series of micro-movements to maintain one's balance to compensate for the inherent instability of the inflated ball. This helps release muscle tension, strengthen the torso, improve posture, reduce spinal compression, and increase circulation and alertness.

Product Notes:

S&H included to most locations in Canada.

A Stability Chair (which is also known as an Exercise, Fitness, Balance, or Ball Chair) consists of a large inflatable Exercise or Yoga ball placed into a special four-legged base, mounted on rolling casters. It does not enable slouching - it requires you to engage your core muscles in subtle ways to maintain your balance on it even with your feet planted firmly on the floor, and encourages better posture.

This helps to strengthen your core (abdominal) and back muscles, and if you do gentle bouncing motions on it, that can assist in lymph drainage, similar to bouncing on a rebounder. Stability Chairs can also help keep stiff back muscles from locking and going into spasm, as it helps improve intervertebral disk circulation.

This chair has a low enough profile that it can be tucked away under most tables or desks when not in use, but is high enough to accommodate users from five feet to over six feet (6'4") tall, and the ball itself can be easily removed to perform any number of stretching and exercise routines with, many of which are set out in a poster included in this kit.

Features and Benefits

  • Stretch, strengthen and tone back muscles.
  • Works naturally with gravity to find your best posture; helps to prevent poor posture health issues.
  • Does not compress discs in the spine like a regular chair.
  • “Active sitting” uses the abdominal and back muscles to correct the curvature of the spine. Active sitting is energizing and invigorating.
  • Relieves stress on the spine, helps prevent back discomfort and repetitive motion disorders.
  • Helps remove toxins through lymphatic system.
  • Can improve posture in as little as one week.
  • Keeps you always active, even on busy work days.

What's Included in the Box:

  • A comfortable, anti-burst stability ball, which is adjustable (via inflation or deflation) from 50 to 60 cm in diameter. The amount of air / size needed will vary with a user's height, weight, leg length, as well as the base height. The objective is for the chair to be the right height so that when you sit on it with your feet flat on the floor, your hips should be slightly higher than your knees. (In other words, there should be slightly more than a 90 degree angle between your hips and your knees while seated on it.)
  • A Hand Pump for inflating the ball.
  • A high quality, smooth rolling base. This base is about 19 by 19 inches square, and is height-adjustable from 8.5 inches high (if you don't use the extra 'risers' or inserts for its 'ankles') to 10.5 inches, if you do. The entire chair weighs about 9 pounds when fully assembled.
  • A set of 4 risers / height extenders to provide that additional 2 inch height, if required. (To get the right spinal alignment, again, your hips should be slightly higher than your legs when sitting on this chair. Hence, Evolution recommends that anyone over 5 feet, 6 inches tall should use the risers. With those lifts, the chair can be used therapeutically by people up to 6 feet, 5 inches tall.) [These risers can also be bought separately, if you happen to lose them or know someone with an old chair without them.]
  • A set of 4 standard casters, so the chair can easily be rolled around when you want to move it, with 2 of them being locking, so it will stay put while is use.
  • Stay Fit with Active Seating - An exercise poster called “Just Move It”, which shows nearly 3 dozen suggested stretching and core-strengthening exercises and workout routines to take full advantage of not only the ball chair but the ball itself.
  • One year warranty on all parts.

Cautions and Warnings:

There is a weight limit for this chair: users must not weigh over 300 pounds (136 kg).

Use this chair only on floors with smooth surfaces, not where there are deep scratches or gouges.

The use of an exercise chair may not be suitable for all users; to avoid the risk of injury, you should consult your doctor. Caution is especially advised for those with acute lower back pain. Similarly, for the exercise routines on the included poster, although they were developed by a certified physiotherapist, you should consult your physician before commencing a new workout routine, especially if you suffer from heart disease, high blood pressure, or other diseases, and these exercises should be done in a slow and controlled manner.

For safe and comfortable use of your Evolution Ball Chair please follow these simple usage and caution points:

When sitting, be sure to slowly sit in the center of the seat to ensure that the locking casters can set. If your chair does not have locking casters, use caution, since the chair may move before you are securely seated; avoid positioning it on low friction floors.

If moving in the chair keep your feet firmly on the ground to maintain your balance. It is not recommended to freely roll in the chair.

When standing up from the seated position, be sure the chair is secure. Stand up vertically and use a secure surface such as a desk to assist in balance, as necessary.

Set Up and Assembly:

No tools are required. (Although to inflate the ball, it would go quicker if you have access to an air compressor, such as at a gas station or bike shop.) There are just two main steps:

1) Outfitting the 'legs' of the base with casters: Lay the base on the floor with its legs pointed up. If the intended user(s) are over 5 ft. 5 inches tall, insert the set of height extenders into the holes on each of the four legs (they just click into place), before inserting the casters into the holes in those extenders. Otherwise, for shorter users, simply insert the stems of the casters directly into each leg of the base, put your palm over the rollers, and press down firmly until the caster clicks into place. Then just turn it over to receive the ball.

2) Inflating the ball: The ball should be at room temperature (rather than cold) before inflating. It can be inflated either with the included hand pump, or with an air compressor (using a needle valve, like one used with basketballs or other types of balls). There will likely be a flexible tape measure included in the box so you can determine when it gets to the initial minimum size of 50 centimeters in diameter. Let it sit for a day to give its material time to accommodate itself to its new pressure and shape, at which point you may want to either add more air or deflate it somewhat.
