In a marriage of form, function, and fashion, Blueair's more affordable "Blue" line of air purifiers all use a washable fabric prefilter which wraps around the entire base of the machine where the main filter resides – but on the exterior, for all to see.

Consequently, they have produced it in a total of six colours for this model to fit in with a variety of decors, consumer tastes, or moods, including two neutral shades of grey (the "Dark Shadow" which the machines come with, which isn't actually that dark once it gets stretched over the white frame) or off-white (the "Lunar Rock").

Their primary purpose is to extend the life of the main filter and save you money by trapping the larger particles or other airborne debris such as dust or pet hair which would clog it up sooner. They're made of a stretchy fabric; the label on the ones for the original Blue Pure 211 (which has all these same colours except for Saffron Red) indicates they're composed of 93% nylon and 7% spandex.

They're actually designed to last almost indefinitely. You simply need to vacuum them every week or two when you see them accumulating a lot of dust, hair, or ashes, etc., and they can also be machine washed at low temperature on the gentle cycle just as pantyhose or tights can. But they will eventually show signs of wear, and you may also want some in other colours to match different rooms or user preferences.

Compatibility:

Blueair has manufactured at least three different Blue series machines in this size profile which have all been named the '411' in the North American market: the 411, the 411+, and the 411 Auto. It's less confusing in the international or global market: the Plus version is called the Joy S, and the Auto is called the Blue 3210.

Although they all use the same main Blueair 411 filters, these machines all have slightly different dimensions or characteristics of their bases, such that the prefilters are not exactly interchangeable.

Blueair characterizes these 'Plus' ones as being incompatible with the original 411 model, because the 411+ borrowed a leaf from Blueair's 211+ model to introduce a metal enclosure (which looks a little like a small office wastebasket) to fit around the main filter, both to protect it from children's pokes or animals' claws, and to balance the weight of the machine better to make it less tippy (the motor is on top).

Consequently, the Plus model base has a slightly larger diameter than the 411 model and thus their prefilters needed to be correspondingly slightly larger, so they came out with this series. And although they would indeed fit, you might find they don't seem as taut on the original 411 machine.

Similarly, the new 411 Auto machines have also dispensed with that outer metal 'cage,' which would likely make these ones a bit loose or wrinkly on it, as well. For those, Blueair took the opportunity to develop a new type of fabric filter, which also incorporates a pocket to hold any excess slack in the power cord. (The 411+, on the other hand, incorporate a sliding magnet on the power cord itself, which can be affixed to the metal housing to tuck it behind or to take up the slack.)

The Bottom Line

If your Blueair 411+ machine has a metal filter housing when you peel the prefilter off, these are the ones for you.
