Product Notes:

Is this the Right Model Size?

The '411' in the various Blue Pure model names signals they're designed for small to mid-sized rooms. This one is rated as being ideal for rooms up to 219 square feet to achieve Blueair's preferred performance standard of nearly five full air exchanges per hour (unlike some companies which fudge their clean air delivery rate and room size numbers to be relative to only one hourly exchange).

Some typical room dimensions that are either well within or very close* to this machine's capacity at that rating include: small bedrooms with 12x14, 11x15, 14x16*, or 14x18* feet walls; small rec. or family rooms with 12x16, 15x12, 12x16, or 18x14* feet walls; or small living rooms with 10x13 or 12x18 feet walls. (All assuming the ceilings are no more than 8 feet high.)

Of course, the 411i Max can also be used in a room much larger than that if it's unlikely to have huge influxes of pollutants or odours (like someone smoking), or you're not too concerned how long it takes for a single full exchange of all its air. Although it takes only 12.5 minutes for the machine to do that in a 219 ft² room, it can also achieve that in just 30 minutes in a room nearly twice as big (526 ft²).

Those with somewhat larger or more pollution-prone mid-sized rooms would do better with either the previous Blue Pure generation's 311 or the new 311i+ Max (depending on which features you desire), however, while those with extra-large rooms up to 635 ft² should see the 211i Max.

Distinguishing 411i Max from Previous Generations

This is actually the fourth generation of Blueair's 411 Blue Pure machines, and it varies from the two other 411 models still in production in several respects, including the 411 Auto.

Considering its core function – purifying the air – the most salient difference is its capacity. Specifically, the fact it surpasses the 118 cubic feet per minute (cfm) minimum threshold recommended for small to mid-sized rooms by the University of Toronto civil engineering professor featured in CBC Marketplace's influential review of air purifiers, on all three performance measures: removing dust, pollen and smoke. These are all rated at 141 cfm for the 411i MAX, compared to 105 and 96 for the lowest measures for the original [manual] 411 and the newer 411 Auto models, respectively.

5 Air Quality Indicator colours for Blue Pure MaxThe new "Max" offspring also includes the automation feature that's only present in the last of the three previous 411s, and improves on at least one aspect of it: the display area. This system (which used to be a luxury option adding over $100 to the cost of the Pro models) involves a built-in air quality sensor that can measure the incoming PM 2.5 particle levels in order to automatically trigger changes in the fan speed (if 'Auto' speed setting's selected), and shows its readings on a graded colour scale via a capsule-shaped LED on the face of the machine.

The new Max machines have added two more settings to make it a five point qualitative scale on the room's air quality (between very polluted and excellent, as depicted in this accompanying graphic), so you can see in real time what the machine is contending with and decide whether to turn the speed up or down yourself or set it to Auto (if it wasn't already).

The MAX machines also incorporate a number of refinements in their materials and designs to enhance their appearance and cut their operating costs and noise levels, including:

  • Changing the shape of the overall machine to be slightly tapered rather than purely cylindrical.
  • Placing a noise shield around the motor to reduce the highest fan speed noise a few more Decibels.
  • Improving the airflow with new hole patterns for the incoming and treated air, and using a new type of technical knitted fabric for the reusable prefilters on the exterior of the unit which trap larger particles to extend the life of the main filters. These will be produced in five Scandinavian colours (as shown here; the unit ships with the rightmost 'Stockholm Fog' silver-grey colour), which are far subtler/more muted than the ones for the 411 and the now-discontinued 411+.
  • Altering their HEPASilent filters (which still capture at least 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.1 micron in size (including Dust, Pollen, Mold, Pet Dander, and Bacteria & Viruses, as well as significant amounts of smoke, airborne chemicals and gases, and cooking and pet odours) to last up to 50% longer, such that a typical user may only have to replace them every nine months rather than every six.
  • Adding a fourth speed control setting for Night Mode, so you can quickly set it to the lowest speed and fully dim the lights with a single button.

Wi-Fi Enabled

The 411i Max also introduces a Wi-Fi connection capability that's not available on any of the other 411's, including the new and otherwise identical Blue Pure 411a Max model. This enables it to synch up with your smart phone or tablet using the free Blueair app to access far more programming options and information readouts for the air purifier than you can get just from its control functions up top.

These include remote control (not only from across the room, but away from your home altogether); more detailed air quality readings; a scheduling ability (to turn itself onto the highest speed 15 minutes before you return from work or travel, e.g.); and an indication of the remaining lifespan for the main filter (expressed as a percentage), based on an advanced machine learning algorithm which takes the actual fan speed, usage time and pollutant levels into account. It can even enable the machine to be voice controlled, with the help of Alexa or Google voice assistance (if you have those set up).

This free mobile app available for both Android and Apple devices). Once it's been set up, it can help you monitor both your current and historical indoor air quality (as recorded by the machine's AQ sensor, which can be uploaded to the app when you have its Wi-Fi enabled) and the real-time outdoor air quality (as provided by the Breezometer company, which tracks carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and ozone as well as PM2.5 and PM10 particles.)

Finally, it should be noted that the Blue Pure Max air purifiers are all independently evaluated for their air exchange performance claims by the AHAM Verified program; certified for energy efficiency by the Energy Star program; and certified for zero ozone emissions by Intertek (since they emit fewer than 5 parts per billion; the measured Ozone Emissions for this model are well within that threshold, at 2.0 ppb), and have been awarded a "Quiet Mark" designation by the Noise Abatement Society (NAS) as being among the quietest products in their category.
