As explained in this video using a slightly different brand as an example, although they're not for everybody (i.e., not for those who prefer a big, fluffy pillow), buckwheat pillows have several virtues: they're all-natural (their filling is from plant material: the hulls of a type of cereal grain); they're hypo-allergenic (few are allergic to buckwheat, and its outer shell material tends to be avoided by dust mites and other pests, who find it too hard and not nutritious enough to want to feast on);
Buckwheat pillows dissipate heat and moisture well (because the curved shapes of the hulls leave air channels); and they are easy to mold into shape so the pillow can be plumped into the spots needed to bear the weight (between the crook of the neck and the shoulders) while leaving a channel for the parts of the face or head you may want to sink lower, to get the best alignment. Some users find the increased support can help with TMJ disorders.
One final virtue is their durability, buckwheat hull pillows can hold up very well for at least eight years, unlike conventional pillows which should probably be replaced every couple of years.
