Ideal for athletes and bodybuilders, beta-alanine is an amino acid supplement which can help improve muscular strength and enhance overall athletic performance, because it gets converted to carnosine, which enables our muscles to function more efficiently and longer before they get fatigued and start breaking down.

Product Notes:

As a precursor to carnosine, the non-essential amino acid beta-alanine may help you train harder or do more reps before feeling too much of a burn or experiencing painful muscle cramps.

Carnosine is a natural 'dipeptide': a combination of the two amino acids beta-alanine and histidine which unite to play many important roles in our bodies, especially the skeletal muscles, where they serve as a pH buffer during endurance events, and the brain, where they function as an antioxidant. If there are too many requirements for the carnosine at a given time, our bodies will prioritize keeping it concentrated in the brain rather than the muscles, so if you are going to being placing increasing demands on the latter, it may be a good idea to turn to supplements to increase its supply.

Of course, Carnosine itself is available in supplementary form (as L-Carnosine), but when it gets ingested, our digestive system breaks it apart into its two constituents, and some of those can get denatured and lost in the process before the body has a chance to convert them back into Carnosine. Fortunately, one can get a more effective and cost efficient results by reversing that process: taking just this first part, beta-alanine, which can get readily converted into carnosine by binding with the other part, histidine, which tends to be available in ample supply in most people's bodies since there are sufficient quantities of it in both the meats and legumes we consume.

Supplementing with Beta-Alanine is most widely used in physical performance contexts such as endurance workouts. Studies indicate that it works by buffering the cellular pH in the muscles during reps of 60-240 second bouts. A decrease of cellular pH during exercise is what can trigger muscle cramps and cause that burning feeling, as the lactic acid builds up; reducing those uncomfortable feelings will improve the duration of high intensity during those reps or other types of training.

Related Product

Beta alanine is quite similar to Citrulline malate in many respects (e.g., both promote stamina), although they do differ. If deciding between the two, Canadian Protein recommends Beta alanine for reducing the 'burn' during exercises and promoting increases in stamina and endurance in general, while Citrulline malate is ideal for "muscle pumps" (achieving a near-immediate (but temporary) increase in muscle size when you lift weights). But you may well want to use them together before a workout, because they work synergistically.

Ingredients:

Each 2 Gram scoop of the powdered version contains just that: 2 g of Beta-Alanine (3-Aminopropanoic acid), with no additional ingredients.

Each Capsule contains:

500 mg Beta-Alanine (3-Aminopropanoic acid)

Non-medicinal ingredients: gelatin (capsule).

Allergy Statement: This product is made in a facility that handles milk products, gluten, shellfish, soy, peanuts and other tree nuts.

Suggested Usage:

Adults: take either 6 capsules once per day, or one 2 gram scoop 1 time per day.

If taking the powder, mix it well in 1 or 2 cups of a liquid such as water or juice, immediately before consumption.

Timing: there is not really a specific or optimal time to take Beta-Alanine relative to your workout, but it should be taken at some point in the day prior to your exercise to enable the conversion to Carnosine. On the other hand, supplementing with a lot of Beta-Alanine at once can cause a tingling feeling called paresthesia, which is harmless, but that could be avoided by taking smaller doses throughout the day.

Warnings:

Consult your healthcare practitioner prior to use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Ensure that you adequately hydrate before, during, and after exercise.

May cause a flushing, tingling and/or prickling sensation of the skin; in which case, reduce the dose. Other side effects can include a slight headache and dizzy spells.
