Chanca Piedra (the Spanish term for "stone crusher") or Phyllanthus niruri (the scientific Latin name) is a fairly small plant which grows a foot or two high certain coastal areas, particularly in the rainforests of the Amazon. It also goes by other names, including "gale of the wind" and "seed-under-leaf," but its "stonebreaker" moniker is likely due to its traditional uses to break up or expel gallstones and kidney stones, or perhaps even help prevent their formation, not only by many generations of Amazonian indigenous peoples, but also in Asian Ayurvedic medicine, where it is also used for stomach, liver, and spleen problems.
