Chanca Piedra (the Spanish term for "stone crusher") is a fairly small plant which grows a foot or two high certain coastal areas, particularly in the rainforests of the Amazon. It has traditionally been used to break up or expel gallstones and kidney stones, or perhaps even help prevent their formation, not only by many generations of Amazonian indigenous peoples, but also in Asian Ayurvedic medicine, where it is also used for stomach, liver, and spleen problems.
Phyllanthus niruri (its scientific Latin name) also goes by other names, including "stonebreaker", "gale of the wind" and "seed-under-leaf."
