Ephedrine in Canada
This product is no longer available from the manufacturer and is not expected to return to market. Single-ingredient ephedrine products are no longer available due to potential misuse as a precursor in the illegal production of controlled substances.
What is Ephedrine?
Ephedrine is derived from plants of the Ephedra genus (a shrub, which comes in many shapes and forms). It acts as a natural bronchodilator, and can be quite beneficial at relieving nasal congestion and other allergy or cold-related symptoms, or to decrease the symptoms of asthma.
The only recommended use for Ephedrine is for the relief of nasal congestion due to colds or hay fever. Similar products are promoted in other markets for other applications.

Suggested Usage:
Adults and children 12 years of age and over: Take 1 tablet every 6 to 8 hours, for relief of nasal congestion due to cold or hay fever. Maximum daily dose is 4 tablets.
Duration of Use: Do not exceed the stated dose or take for more than seven consecutive days, except on the advice of your healthcare practitioner.

Do not take ephedrine if you are currently taking or have recently taken monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor drugs.
Ephedrine may have a short-term weight loss effect by increasing metabolic rate and the amount of body fat available to convert to energy. However, use as a stimulant can cause serious cardiovascular events such as arrhythmias, palpitations, tachycardia, or myocardial infarction, and is NOT an approved use.

Conclusion: The present review of the literature tends to show that their vasoconstrictive action on the nasal mucosa makes both ephedrine and pseudoephedrine highly effective against nasal congestion.
