Borage (Borago officinalis) is an annual flowering plant which also goes by the names starflower, bee bush, bee bread, and bugloss, whose leaves and flowers are not only is edible, but have medicinal properties, along with its seeds. This herb is a source of B vitamins, beta-carotene, choline, and trace minerals, but most importantly, it's also the highest known plant source of the Omega 6 essential fatty acid known as GLA, or gamma-linolenic acid. The liquid GLA Skin Oil can also be applied topically along with being an oral treatment (some apply it to the face after washing as an anti-aging moisturizer), and Lorna's SKINsmart GLA Borage Oil is now also available in capsules.
Borage has been used for a number of skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea, psoriasis and dermatitis. On that score, it may be especially useful for "cradle cap" (a common name for seborrheic dermatitis or seborrhea) in infants, and it may also help combat wrinkles and restore smooth, glowing skin in post-menopausal women, who tend to be less able to produce GLA on their own, due to an impairment in their enzymes which convert it from the fats in their diets. It may even be able to reduce cramps and breast pain related to periods.
