The term "superfood" gets thrown around a lot, these days, but we think this certainly qualifies. Turmeric isn't just a spice for curry, it's also been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic medicine to help digestive and liver functions, among other things. It's now known to have both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to account for those uses, with several important types of therapeutic applications being studied in Western medicine: relieving osteoarthritis joint pain (thanks to its active ingredient curcumin); lowering LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in overweight people with high cholesterol, and reducing that low- density lipoprotein's susceptibility to oxidation, which can help prevent plaque from building up in the arteries; and helping treat and prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes and some of its complications.
Although it's normally difficult for our bodies to fully absorb this superfood to really take advantage of all these potential benefits, this type has been fermented, which makes it much easier to digest and assimilate, and also enhances its flavour profile.
