As grocery stores and municipalities continue to phase single-use plastic shopping bags, we may wonder: what about produce? What's the best way to collect them from store bins and bring them home? Start with this set of reusable set of mesh produce bags from Tru Earth - they're strong, versatile, and you can simply rinse them off between uses.

Product Notes:

Composition and Care

These bags are made of 100% organic cotton, with a double-stitched design, making them both relatively strong and durable (these should last you years), and easy to wash.

Because of their mesh design, it's easy to rinse them off in the sink to remove the mud from carrots or radishes. You can also either hand wash them in the sink or put them in a washing machine. Either way, lay them out flat to air dry.

Size and Capacity

These eco-friendly, reusable bags come in two sizes. The Medium ones are nearly square, at about 9-1/2 by 11 inches (24 x 28 cm) when flattened empty, while the Large are the same width but a few inches taller than that (i.e., 9-1/2 x 14-1/2 inches, or 24 by 37 cm).

The Medium ones are apt to be used for smaller, rounder things (like the apples, oranges, peppers, and potatoes), while the Large ones can hold larger items like melons or heads of broccoli, cabbage or lettuce, or longer ones, like carrots. You get three of both sizes in each set.

To give some sense of their capacity, Tru Earth indicates the Medium ones can hold as many as ten large apples or oranges at once (which is probably two more than the typical existing produce bags), while the Large ones can hold sixteen of them (or twice as much as a typical plastic produce bag), or not just one but two butternut squash.

Suggested Usage:

To use them without needing to remove their individual contents to put them on the checkout scale or getting 'dinged' for the actual weight of the bag each time you checkout, these bags:

1) have an open, mesh design, so the cashier or self-checkout assistant/ supervisor can see what is being weighed; and,

2) come with their own tare weight tag, so that those stores set up for that (which is already the case for some stores, and will become increasingly so as more and more customers start adopting these types of alternative bags) can just immediately deduct the weight of the bag from the total. (These weights are 0.06 lb or 26g for the Medium size, and 0.08 lb or 33g for the Large.)

(Of course, to facilitate this step, we should continue to use a separate bag for each type of produce we select, just as we've done with the plastic bags.)

The bags all have a drawstring to pull the top closed to prevent the contents from escaping and rolling around in your vehicle or fridge (the open design may help keep some produce keep fresher longer in the fridge than plastic bags). You probably should not use those as carrying handles, however.
