Product Notes:

Supplements for Shift Workers

Awake & Asleep were formulated by Dr. Pushpa Chandra, a Naturopathic Doctor with an Ayurvedic background who had been using these high quality, evidence-based ingredients to help contend with doing shift work for over 25 years in her previous career as a critical care nurse.

Produced in Canada under Good Manufacturing Practices, they feature an elite class of high potency herbs with adaptogenic and antioxidant properties to help protect, restore, refresh and rejuvenate naturally.

Performance. Stamina. Rejuvenation.

Awake and Asleep were originally designed to work in combination for shift workers who not only needed help with combating stress and having a more restful sleep during their off hours, but also with keeping energy and attention levels up (and accidents and mistakes down) during their shifts.

Not just limited to shiftworkers or those seeking to combat shift work sleep disorder (SWSD), these all-natural, caffeine-free, and non-addictive herbal supplements are also very useful separately as stand-alone products for many groups of people.

In addition to the shiftworkers they're named for, as well as others working irregular work hours (such as airline, train, or bus crews, emergency or utility workers, etc.) and those suffering from jet lag due to travel, some other logical candidates for either of these products include:

* Awake should be of keen interest to: Athletes, seeking improved physical and mental stamina; students, struggling with flagging attention or endurance; virtually anyone routinely relying on caffeine for energy, or to stay awake; those seeking a tonic for their reduced stamina and immunity that might be due to adrenal fatigue; and those who want to take a preventative approach before various types of chemical, biological or physical stressors of take their toll.

* Asleep may be of benefit to: Anyone with problems falling or staying asleep (even if they live on a regular schedule); or those suffering from insomnia due to stress; or those who often feel wired and tired; or even those dealing with arthritis pain or inflammation issues, or who want to improve their immune health.

Shiftworkers Health - Awake

Awake & Asleep Logo

To help fight off fatigue, optimize cognitive and physical performance, support immune function, and protect many organs from cell damage, Awake includes many key ingredients: some quite familiar to the general public as useful for immunity (Vitamin D... which is joined here by the lesser known L. glutamine, which helps fuel the grown of immune cells, and Schisandra ).

Ingredients like Siberian ginseng and Rhodiola may be better known by performance athletes like Dr. Chandra herself (a marathoner) for helping improve focus, endurance and recovery for intense activities.

Other components in this formula are beginning to be more broadly recognized for their "nootropic" (memory and/or cognition enhancing) effects (including Bacopa, Schisandra, and L. tyrosine, as well as Siberian ginseng and Rhodiola, again). Marigold is also included, which can help protect eyesight, and many of the ingredients already mentioned also have antioxidant properties to protect the eyes, brain, or liver.

Shiftworkers Health - Asleep

Asleep is a combination of several ingredients one might expect in a product with that name, including of course Melatonin – the natural sleep hormone whose presence is most vital to improving sleep quality and duration – plus Vitamin B12, which also shares a role in regulating the sleep/wake cycle (and Vitamin D, not only for its immune effects, but also since deficiencies in it are associated with low sleep quality).

The mineral magnesium and the amino acid taurine are included, which work well together to induce muscle relaxation and promote a more restful sleep. Several other ingredient work at a more psychological level to promote calmness and relaxation and to enhance sleep quality (GABA, an amino acid which acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, and L-Theanine, another amino acid commonly found in tea, which helps relax without being sedating).

Asleep also includes one ingredient which might be slightly unexpected to some more modern supplement users who know it more as an adaptogen to increase energy, stamina, or testosterone levels during the day: Ashwagandha. But that's because they may be forgetting the latter part of its Latin name (Withania somnifera) actually means "sleep-inducing," and they may not know it's the only adaptogen that you can take at night to help counteract the feeling of being tired and wired and to get to sleep and feel rejuvenated after.
