* Many other brands either mix the ocean water with regular water, or grow the spirulina in ordinary subterranean water or in salt lakes. This type was cultivated in greenhouses using pristine water from 612 meters deep which was extracted off the coast of Kumejima Island (near Okinawa, Japan), where the water is pure, and of a consistent temperature, and has abundant nutrients, but there is not enough sunlight for other algae such as phytoplankton to survive and absorb those nutrients before the water was extracted.
