The comfrey or "knitbone" plant has a long history of being used in poultices to help speed the healing or at least quell the pain in (superficial) burns, bruises, sprains, swelling, arthritis, gout, and, yes, even broken bones. Comfrey contains compounds like allantoin, rosmarinic acid, and tannins which may help reduce inflammation and regenerate damaged tissue.

Product Notes:

Randomized, double-blind clinical studies have shown comfrey's efficacy in temporarily relieving the aches and pains of muscles and ligaments caused by strains and sprains, especially in the ankle and lower back.

This non-staining cream from Terry Naturally is safe even for children from ages 4 and up (although it should not be used on deep cuts or bites, and should only be used as directed).

Comfrey is a family of fast-growing perennial plants which have been used as a medicinal herb for many purposes in a variety of medical traditions for centuries -- millennia, even. However, it is now largely confined to only external/topical use, since it was discovered to contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) which can be quite harmful to the liver. The type used in this ointment is made from Russian Comfrey, which is much lower in PAs, and the type specifically grown for this product is reportedly free of them altogether, particularly since it only uses the freshly harvested above-ground parts of the plant -- not its roots, where the PAs are more concentrated.
