Weighed Blankets - Therapeutic Use

An extension of the weighted therapeutic vests or wraps originally developed as a means of applying "deep touch pressure" or "deep pressure stimulation" to people with autism, attention deficit, or other disorders, Weighted Blankets emulate the healing powers of a human touch, like a comforting hug.

Touch can actually have both physiological and psychological effects which decrease your stress level, improve your mood and help you sleep, in several ways: by simultaneously reducing the secretion of the stress hormone cortisol, and increasing the amount of "feel-good hormones" such as oxytocin and the production of mood-related neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin; the latter is also the precursor to melatonin, which helps regulate sleep.

Just as a therapeutic massage keys in on certain pressure points in various areas of a person's body to relieve stress and release endorphins, the weighted elements evenly distributed across a good weighted blanket will softly stimulate many pressure points to produce a sense of calm and tranquility, to make it easier to have a "power nap" (if you are using it as a wrap, while on chair or couch), or to have a more restful sleep (if using it in bed).

Blanket Construction

Of course, you wouldn't want the blanket itself to end up disrupting your sleep if their weighted elements apply too much pressure in some areas or make too much noise or cause discomfort if you change your position or shift the blanket around while sleeping.

That can happen with some types of weighted elements or fills in weighted blankets, wraps, and vests, which have included materials such as plastic balls or beads, steel beads, sand, pebbles or river stones, dried foods, and even metal chains.

It's also undesirable to have a fill which could accumulate bacteria or other contaminants or foster the growth of mold or mildew and compromise your health, if it's a type which can't be washed (lest the fill decompose, degrade, clump together, or break apart).

The Zensory blankets circumvent these problems by using a premium type of hypoallergenic glass beads (which are biologically inert, so won't attract pests, and are non-porous, so won't absorb moisture or dust or other irritants) as the fill, and distributing them evenly throughout the blanket in a series of individually stitched 4-inch squares, which each sandwich a layer of glass beads between two layers of padding and two sets of fabric (an interior layer and the exterior surface).

This seven-layered Mini Pocket Construction makes the product more durable; prevents the loss of the weighted fill; provides a continuous balance and even distribution of the weight; and minimizes the noise if you shift position or move the blanket. To maintain it in this condition, you are advised NOT to wash the Weighted Blanket itself (spot clean its outer surface only), but to enclose it in the matching Duvet Cover.

Size and Weight Options

To achieve such effects, the ideal "weighted wellness" ratio is to use a weighted blanket or wrap weighing between 10% and 12% of your own total body weight. (For example, someone weighing 150 lbs would be best served by a blanket weighing about 10% of that: 15 lbs.)

There are three Purecare Zensory Weighted Blanket options available to meet those needs:

* the 7 lb Kids Weighted Blanket, which is recommended for any users weighing between 60 and 90 lbs. This type is only about two-thirds as large as the two other types. At 41 inches wide x 60" long (or 104 x 152 cm), it is large enough to cover most people's bodies, but smaller than a regular Twin sized single bed (38 x 75"). It comes equipped with the Duvet Cover, in a single colour, which could described as light green, mint green, or even turquoise.

* the 15 lb Adult Weighted Blanket, which is recommended for users weighing between 125 and 150 lbs; and,

* the 20 lb Adult Weighted Blanket, which is recommended for users weighing between 170 and 200 lbs.

The two adult sized blankets are both 48 inches (4 feet, or nearly 122 cm) wide by 72" (6 ft, or nearly 183 cm) long, which is comparable to a Full size bed (which tend to be 53 or 54 inches wide by 75" long).

The two adult blankets do not come pre-paired with a washable duvet cover (which is highly recommended, since these weighted blankets are not washable, being filled with glass beads), to enable customers either to use their own existing duvet covers if they already have one of the right dimensions, or to select their preferred colour of the matching Zensory covers separately.

About the Duvet Covers

The Duvet Covers – which are included with the Kids model [solely in mint green, as shown, but the colour you see in the photos and video on your screen might vary slightly depending on your display settings] but are sold separately in a choice of three colours for the two Adult sizes – are all reversible and 100% washable.

They feature two different fabrics you can opt to face outwards, which you may well choose to alternate between, depending on your personal preference or the season - particularly if you use it more as a stand-alone wrap while seated, for you to "chill out" after work or when winding down during an evening.

For the cooler months or for a softer feel right on your bare skin, one side of the cover is a lush, velveted fleece. (That's the blue, pink, or light green coloured side, in the various photos or videos here.) This has more of a traditional "blankie" feel.

For warmer days, the other side (the folded flap, in several of the photos, or the one shown alone in the swirly photo with the "Finish" title in its upper left) is more like a silky sheet. Featuring natural Tencel™ Lyocell microfibers (which are derived from sustainably sourced wood), this soft material feels quite gentle and cool to the touch, and can absorb moisture and wick it away better than cotton, since it is so breathable, making it less susceptible to fostering odorous bacteria growth.

To further guard against odor build-up in-between washings, these covers also incorporate the same Anti-Bacterial Silver Ions offered in PureCare's mattress and pillow protectors, to provide antimicrobial protection.

Finally, to make it easier to orient and fit these duvet covers on after washing them or reversing their outer side, both they and the Zensory weighted blankets have colour-matched tabs to connect with each other.

Warranty

The weighted blankets have a 3 year manufacturer's warranty, and there is a 1 year warranty on the duvet covers.
