Vitamin B-12 plays many vital functions in the body. While many people can get all they need from food or regular multivitamins, certain groups are prone to deficiencies, including vegetarians, seniors, and those with chronic gastrointestinal disorders (such as IBS or Crohn's disease) or malabsorption issues (such as those with Celiac disease or a gluten intolerance). These deficiencies can be manifested in a variety of ways: not only physical (being more susceptible to infections, developing poor balance, tremors, numbness, or tingling) but also cognitive or psychological, or both (fatigue).

The "Hydroxy" form (which is short for "hydroxocobalamin") is the type you'd be most apt to receive as a "booster shot" in an injection from a physician, especially in the U.K., because it's safe (even for pregnant people); it readily transforms into two active forms (adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin) which play somewhat different roles; it gets to work quite quickly (it takes fewer steps to convert than the cyanocobalamin form many use for home injections); and can be retained in the body longer than the latter form since it binds more firmly to plasma proteins.

In addition, hydroxocobalamin can also help remove cyanide from your body (by binding to it, to transform into the far more innocuous cyanocobalamin form of vitamin B12), which can benefit smokers or those who may have been exposed to certain types of burning plastic.
