"Sitting is the new smoking," they say. When we sit passively for hours on end in regular seats, we're placing pressure on the tailbone and pelvic floor and underneath the buttocks, and many of us make it even worse by slouching as we sit, which can lead to neck, back, hip, and/or shoulder pain, stooping when we walk, and subsequent joint problems.
Active seating, on the other hand -- such as with a stability chair (also known as an Exercise, Fitness, Balance, or Ball Chair) or a Swopper or a Muvman stool which incorporate actual springs into their base -- requires one to make a series of micro-movements to maintain one's balance, in order to compensate for the inherent instability of the seat (even when the feet are planted firmly on the floor).
This can encourage better posture, help keep stiff back muscles from locking up and going into spasm, help strengthen the torso, release muscle tension, reduce spinal compression, and increase circulation and alertness.
