The thymus gland has several critical roles in protecting us from diseases. First, it serves as a kind of hatchery and training ground for the immature T-cells (or Thymus-derived lymphocytes): the three types of white blood cells which can either be used to directly fight off harmful invaders such as bacteria, viruses, toxins, and dead cells; or to help the B-cells (or B lymphocytes) produce specific antibodies to kill them; or to help prevent human autoimmune diseases, by suppressing the other T-cells and B-cells when they are becoming so overzealous that they are attacking the body.
It then serves as a sort of aircraft hangar to release those trained T cells to travel to the lymph nodes to fight infections in the body, when called upon to do so by the brain.
