What are Vitamins? The Essential Facts
Vitamins are some of the essential ingredients that help us to maintain healthy bodies and healthy minds. We consume and absorb vitamins mostly through food, and need a regular supply of all of them to ensure the smooth running of all our bodily functions.
Vitamins come in two forms - water soluble and fat soluble.

B vitamins - These are: B1 - Thiamin, B2 -

board in most food groups, the B vitamins are essential for
making nerve cells (preventing depression), red blood cells
and for releasing energy from food amongst other uses.
The fat soluble vitamins are vitamins A, D, E, and K. These are different to the water soluble vitamins because they are stored by our bodies. This means that it is possible to consume too much of each of these vitamins, with harmful side effects.
Vitamin A - An antioxidant for vision, healthy skin and tissue. Found in dairy products and eggs and liver. Toxic in excessive amounts. Can also be made in the body from the beta-carotene in leafy green and orange vegetables and orange fruits.
Vitamin D - Absorbed primarily through exposure to the sun, this vitamin builds up healthy bones and teeth.
Vitamin E - Another antioxidant. Fights free radicals and helps maintain healthy skin. Found in poultry and fish, vegetables, nuts, seeds, wheatgerm.
Vitamin K - Helps the body to make various proteins, one being necessary for blood clotting, and prevent osteoporosis. Contained in leafy green vegetables, margarine and soya oil.
