R-alpha-lipoic acid (RLA) is a naturally-occurring fatty acid derivative that is involved in several key metabolic pathways. It was originally identified as essential cofactor in the production of energy by mitochondria.
The most active form of alpha-lipoic acid, RLA contains a cyclic disulfide moiety that is readily reduced to form dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA). The redox pair of RLA and DHLA acts as a powerful antioxidant by scavenging free radicals from reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, as well as by chelating transition metals such as iron and copper.
Perhaps the simplest way to explain lipoic acid is: R-Lipoic Acid is the good guy, and S-Lipoic Acid is the bad guy. While R-lipoic acid has the powerful effects of a great antioxidant, S-Lipoic acid can, at times, counteract all the helpful properties of R-Lipoic Acid.
Two specific properties of RLA have gained interest for clinical therapeutic purposes:
First, RLA supplementation contributes significantly to reduction of fat mass and body weight. These effects occur, at least in part, by reducing food intake, increasing energy expenditure, and through an interplay with insulin in regulation of blood sugar.
Secondly, RLA has been used for decades to treat neuropathy, particularly as associated with diabetes. The mechanism of action here is not well understood, but may involve the protection of peripheral nerves against damage resulting from hypoglycemia. Taken together, the data support the value of dietary supplementation with RLA, for various benefits related to the attainment or maintenance of normal health.
