Choose between an alcohol-free formula (which requires refrigeration after opening), or one in a base of 39.4% grain alcohol (which does not, and which can be used for first aid purposes, as well).
Many of us tend to avoid bitter tastes, especially in North America, but that can be a mistake we pay for with a series of digestive complaints including poor appetite, or feeling excessively full or sluggish after eating, or suffering from gas. That's because when our taste buds detect bitterness, they stimulate the production of stomach acid and liver bile to enhance digestion, particularly of fats.
A number of different bitter tasting herbs, roots and vegetables have traditionally been used on a supplementary basis as an aid to indigestion over the years, but this particular centuries-old formula is named after the Austrian herbalist Maria Treben, who was taught it in the 1940s.
There is also an alternate version with many overlapping ingredients (albeit in different ratios) available in a dried packet form, which you can make into your own bitters at home by adding vodka and letting it steep for 8 days: the Flora Original Sweden Elixir / Swedenbitters Dry Herbal Mix.

Suggested Usage:
Adults: Take 5 ml (1 tsp) in water or herbal tea, 3 to 4 times daily. Shake the bottle well before using.
Keep the alcohol-free version refrigerated and use within six weeks of opening. (The alcohol version does not require refrigeration and has a much longer shelf life.)
Unless advised by a health care practitioner, do not use for more than 1 week at a time.
The type WITH alcohol can also be used externally for cuts, insect bites, bruises, rashes, and scars.

Do not use Maria's Swedish Bitters if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; or if you have kidney disorders, gallstones, hemorrhoids, irritable bowel conditions, bowel obstruction / inflammation; or if you are allergic to the Asteraceae/Compositae family.
