Have you heard about spore-based (or spore-forming) probiotics, which are of soil-based rather than mammalian origin? To use a gardening analogy, they're almost like sunflower seeds, with a hard protective shell that opens up to release the live bacteria within and reactivate them from dormancy when they reach the right conditions. That enables them to survive hot and humid conditions as well as our digestive juices far better than conventional types, so they don't need to be taken in mega-doses to be effective.

This particular type, MTCC 5856, has actually been in the global market for nearly 30 years, now, under the trade name LactoSpore®. Clinical trials have demonstrated it's especially helpful in managing the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) at this dosage, resulting in significant reductions in abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, diarrhea, and stool consistency and frequency compared to placebo. It's also been shown to be effective in reducing bloating and gas in those without full-fledged IBS.

Product Notes:

If you've got IBS, you might think of your intestines like a big beach-front hotel over-occupied during Spring Break, with lots of unruly guests causing major disruptions whom you'd just as soon evict, but can't quite see how.

Fortunately, the LactoSpore friendly bacteria might just be the perfect guests to drive them away, for a number of reasons. They're quite benign themselves. They even help generate power for the hotel when they work out on the treadmill and help maintain the hotel's security by ensuring its doors and windows stay closed as they're meant to, and their very presence helps attract other like-minded guests to do the same. And yet they not only come equipped with a sort of bear spray to neutralize some of the most noxious guests they encounter directly, but also bring a powerful air freshener with them they spray liberally throughout their floor, which most of the decent paying guests appreciate but the rowdy guests find so inhospitable they'll vacate on their own. And, fear not, they won't wear out their welcome themselves! Once you stop admitting them, they'll leave within a week.

That is, for the first point, they've been shown to be quite safe at this dose (and they actually have GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status as a food ingredient in the USA, and an equivalent designation in Canada), and to not interfere with the microbiota of healthy subjects not suffering from gut dysbiosis.

On the 'hotel security' front, like some other types of probiotics, they emit short-chain fatty acids [SCFAs] like butyrate as metabolic by-products, which provide energy for the cells lining the colon and help maintain the integrity of the intestinal barrier (or gut lining).

They also help foster an increase in some other helpful types of SCFA-producing bacteria by driving out some of the unwanted loiterers occupying their spaces, with these last two substances they emit as by-products of their activities: the 'bear spray' is bacteriocin, an antimicrobial agent that inhibits E. coli and Staph (Staphylococcus aureus) infections and a variety of food-borne pathogens; while the 'air freshener' is lactic acid which alters the surrounding luminal pH to a more acidic one they can thrive in but many other types of bacteria do not.

And please note, Bacillus Coagulans only emits lactic acid in its more benign L+ form, not the D-Lactic Acid type that's been associated with "Brain Fogginess" and D-Lactic Acidosis, and which runs the risk of worsening rather than improving (SIBO Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, which the majority of IBS sufferers probably also suffer from).

For the final point, the manufacturer confirms that although the reactivated Bacillus coagulans bacteria can indeed attach themselves to the receptors in our intestines to compete for the food passing through and help restore a healthier microbial balance as they do so, they do not take up permanent residence: once we stop ingesting them, they all clear out of our system (through our feces) within seven days.
