AOR - Lactoferrin

Considering its role in helping protect newborns from infections and its proven ability to impede the replication of structurally similar viruses such as SARS and dengue, Lactoferrin has understandably commanded the attention of many medical researchers lately, with published reviews in peer-reviewed journals proposing it be explored as both a preventive and adjunctive therapy for a range of respiratory and immune-related concerns.

Lactoferrin is a type of milk protein that was discovered to be able to bind with iron (hence its name), which is just one of the ways it fights infections (some pathogens such as E. coli need iron to proliferate; lactoferrin helps by starving them of nutrients when it collects and transports the iron to other areas of the body).

It also assists lysozyme (another component of milk and other bodily secretions) in killing some types of bacteria by breaking down their walls; inhibits certain fungi and viruses from taking root and replicating (either by blocking their entrance to host cells or by binding to the virus itself, which takes it out of play); and stimulates the immune system in various ways.

It's no wonder, then, why so many medical articles have been proclaiming lactoferrin as a logical candidate to use as nutritional support for a a variety of health conditions (especially given its well-established safety profile: literally as safe as mother's milk, and with no lactose!). 

Lactoferrin in Canada

AOR offers a choice of two forms. Both products are vegetarian, non-GMO, gluten-free, and licensed by Health Canada. Natural Product Numbers: 80034612 for Lactoferrin-250, and 80034922 for Lactoferrin Ultra.

AOR Lactoferrin-250

AOR Lactoferrin-250 is lactoferrin alone in its pure form, and is named after the number of milligrams contained per capsule. In addition to general immune support and potentially preventing or relieving viral infections, other applications for it are: for reducing various types of inflammation (including in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts); helping those with an iron deficiency improve how well they can absorb the iron in their supplements or diet; helping people receiving chemotherapy contend with the side effects and rebuild their immune systems; and even helping treat acne (again, by depriving some of the bacteria which causes that of the iron they need to survive).

AOR Lactoferrin-Ultra (Enhanced Whey)

The second AOR formula, Lactoferrin-Ultra, combines an ultra-high dose of lactoferrin to help relieve inflammation and prevent infection, like the first type, with a top-quality whey protein isolate and a high-protein concentrate providing an array of essential and branched chain amino acids your body can use for protein synthesis in order to build antibodies and build and repair body tissue.

This formula is especially recommended for those who are already experiencing an illness or in a weakened condition, to provide powerful immune system support and prevent weight loss during illness, and/or to help regain weight and rebuild muscle mass afterwards.

AOR's unflavoured whey protein is produced from 100% Natural Grade A milk from cows tested as being free of pesticides and negative for antibiotics, using cross-flow microfiltration to minimize unnecessary carbohydrates and saturated fat, while retaining all bioactive peptide subfractions.

Is that price correct? It is. There is significantly more of the key ingredient in the Ultra formula: Each serving of Lactoferrin Ultra contains 4.8 g of lactoferrin, compared to 0.25 g in each capsule.
