Apart from its Latin botanical name and certain variants of it (such as Cissus quadrangula and Vitis quadrangularis), Cissus quadrangularis goes by a dizzying array of names around the world, many of them based on either its shape or its uses, including Adamant Creeper, Asthisamharaka or Asthi Shrinkhala, Bone Setter, Devil's Backbone, Hadjod, Hadjjor, Harjor, Pirandai, Raisin de Galam, Square-stalked Vine, Vajravalli, Veld or Veldt Grape, and Winged Treebine.
