Oxidation - a chemical reaction in which one unstable "free radical" molecule pries an electron away from a nearby one -- can lead to chain reactions that may damage cells and increase the risk of premature aging and various degenerative diseases. Antioxidants are nutrients (which may include vitamins, minerals or enzymes) which help protect the body's cells and DNA from that by becoming "electron donors," to make them complete cells again. CanPrev's Antioxidant Network helps neutralize free radicals with a synergistic combination of antioxidants whose principal functions are detailed below.

"Free radicals" are molecules with an uneven number of electrons, which makes them quite reactive -- they tend to "steal" an electron from neighbouring molecules to produce a pair for their lone electron, which may have a cascading effect, if those newly robbed ones repeat that "oxidation" process. That could be dangerous if the molecule giving up its electron is a piece of DNA which gets mutated, to either switch a cancer gene on or switch a cancer-stopping gene off in that cell, for example, or if it's a type of cholesterol which might be more likely to clog the arteries when they get oxidized. Sources of oxidative stress include air-borne pollutants, ultraviolet light, and certain viruses and diseases, and even the superoxide our own blood cells create to fight bacteria.
Manufacturer's Notes on Individual Ingredients:
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
A fat-soluble antioxidant that is found in virtually every cell of the body. It plays a vital role in generating energy to fuel organs such as the heart, brain and liver. Coenzyme Q10 also helps to regenerate other key antioxidants in the body.
A potent free-radical destroyer that is a precursor to glutathione. Glutathione is the body’s major cellular antioxidant and detoxifying agent, and a key defence against pollutants and ultraviolet radiation.
Are various forms of vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant that provides powerful support for the immune and cardiovascular systems. Vitamin E is the first line of defence against lipid peroxidation. It is important to take a mixture of the entire spectrum of tocopherols to reap vitamin E's many benefits.
DL-Alpha Lipoic Acid
A unique water and fat-soluble antioxidant that is involved in mitochondrial electron transport reactions essential to the production of cellular energy.
Green Tea extract
Contains constituents known as polyphenols that have powerful antioxidant activity. Recent research has shown that these antioxidants may produce anti-cancer effects. They bind up free radicals and effectively mitigate cellular damage in inflammatory states.
Plays an important role in many bodily functions, including immunity, reproduction, growth, taste, vision, smell and normal insulin and thyroid function. It is an essential component of the body’s antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase.
Selenium (from yeast)
A trace mineral that activates the antioxidant enzyme, glutathione peroxidase, and enhances the antioxidant effect of vitamin E.
