Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P5P) is the active form of Vitamin B6, an important coenzyme involved in various bodily processes. P5P is a particularly good choice for B6 supplementation since it is the active form, it's more bioavailable than other supplement choices (which need to be converted into P5P before the body can use them). Supplementing directly with P5P spares the body the extra effort and energy, directly supplying B6 in the optimal form.
Enzymes are the molecules in your body that do the heavy lifting - think of them as the worker-molecules that shuttle between one metabolic process and another, making sure everything runs smoothly. But some of these enzymes need partners in order to work; an analogy, if an imperfect one, might be to think of a coenzyme as the vehicle necessary for shuttling some enzymes around. An enzyme without a coenzyme is a bit like Santa without a sled; it may have a job to do, but can't do it without transportation.
The coenzyme Vitamin B6 works as the "vehicle" for a variety of processes, and the lack of it has a number of tangible effects; it can lead to poor nerve maintenance, thereby increasing experiences of pain such as burning feet and carpal tunnel syndrome. Conversely, supplementation with Vitamin B6 can help with absorption of magnesium, as well as water retention during pregnancy. Some studies even suggest it may be helpful in improving brain function for those with autism.
