QÜELL Fish Oil from Douglas Laboratories excels when it comes to quality, purity, bioavailability, and taste, thanks to both its source material and its advanced processing methods.

Product Notes:

Fish oil is a great source of EPA and DHA: two types of Omega-3 essential fatty acids which are not only needed for our initial fetal brain development but also on an ongoing basis for supporting our eye and brain function and cognitive and cardiovascular health, and possibly relieving joint pain. But even when they offer similar concentrations of that EPA and DHA, fish oil supplements can vary significantly in their quality and taste.

The Right Fish

Douglas Labs begins by selecting the right types of fish to supply plenty of oil apt to be high in EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and low in contaminants, on a sustainable basis: anchovies, sardines, and mackerel, from off the west coast of South America. These are wild, non-endangered species with relatively high amounts of oil, which come from deep, pristine, nutrient-rich ocean waters. They're caught as they emerge in upwellings of the Humboldt Current, and since they are small fry, they're low on the food chain and have less exposure to environmental toxins than bigger fish.

Supercritical Extraction

Then, to achieve the desired concentrations of EPA and DHA, remove impurities, and dramatically improve the taste and odor, the fish oil is subjected to an advanced two-stage Supercritical Fluid Extraction and Chromatography process using CO2 as the medium.

This two-step supercritical fluid process is quite different from the molecular distillation process typically used in supplements, which:

1) uses ethyl alcohol or chemical solvents like hexane to isolate the EPA and DHA from their glycerol - which has limited success, and a higher environmental impact from the waste products, and doesn't leave them in their original, better absorbed triglyceride form;

2) exposes the oil to high temperatures – which risks forming isomers (changing the orientation of the chemical structure of the bonds in some of these beneficial cis fatty acid molecules, which transforms them into undesirable trans fatty acids); and,

3) tends to expose the oil to oxygen – which causes it to degrade faster, facilitates its contamination from microorganisms which need oxygen to survive; and/or requires the addition of preservatives.

In contrast, the supercritical extraction and chromatography processes both use highly pressurized carbon dioxide as the medium – without any exposure to oxygen, high temperatures, or other solvents. This serves to first separate all the omega fatty acids from the other components in the fish oil (including saturated fatty acids, cholesterol, and contaminants); and then to isolate and concentrate the particular kinds of omegas, such as EPA and DHA.

Pure and Concentrated

This extraction process results in a very pure and highly concentrated omega-3 product in the more readily absorbed triglyceride form, providing at least 75% of those active ingredients in their content – compared to there only being 30% of actual omega-3s in typical fish oils (with some of their remaining 70% being comprised by omega-6 fatty acids; some by the chemical solvents, unwanted isomer formations and oxidation products they introduce; and some by the cholesterol, saturated fatty acids, and contaminants the supercritical process is better at removing).

There is also less environmental impact from this approach, since the carbon dioxide itself gets used over and over again (as it alternates between its supercritical fluid state and its ordinary gaseous state), and since the production process uses no chemical solvents and produces no toxic impurities, all its waste products and waste water are either recycled or transformed into energy, either to produce biodiesel fuel or to power the plant.

In addition to being purified multiple times throughout this CO2 extraction process, the complete Quell Fish Oil line is also tested both in-house and at third-party laboratories to ensure it has extremely low levels of heavy metals, pesticides, dioxins, and other potential contaminants.

There are three types of Douglas Laboratories QÜELL Fish Oil:

Quell Fish Oil EPA/DHA Plus D

EPA/DHA Plus D features large amounts of both major types of Omega 3s that can help reduce serum triglycerides and support cardiovascular, cognitive, neurological, vision, and joint health, and includes beneficial Vitamin D3 (which helps maintain healthy bones and the normal functioning of our immune and muscular system). This D3 is fat-soluble, and thus will be well absorbed when consumed with the highly bioavailable triglyceride form of omega-3 fatty acids.

Quell Fish Oil High / Ultra DHA (Currently Unavailable)

As the name implies, for those seeking mainly DHA either for their own cognitive health and brain function and immune system support, or for fetal development, this type delivers a much higher ratio of DHA to EPA (nearly 4 to 1) compared to the previous type (1.5 to 1), in a small, pure and concentrated softgel capsule.

DHA is the most abundant type of fatty acid present in the brain, and has a major role in keeping up the structural integrity of neuronal membranes; adequate levels are needed throughout adulthood for optimal neurological functioning. It is also essential for initial neurological and visual development - it's vital for expectant mothers to consume adequate amounts of DHA throughout pregnancy to support the formation of the retina and visual cortex and brain growth.

Quell Fish Oil High / Ultra EPA

In contrast, for those seeking mainly cardiovascular, immune system, and joint health support in a smaller capsule and/or a means of reducing inflammation, this type deliberately delivers much less DHA than the other two types, but has as much EPA as the first type's larger capsules, for a net ratio of over five times as much EPA as DHA.

EPA may be able to reduce cellular inflammation (not only in the body, such as for rheumatoid arthritis, but also in the brain), since is the direct precursor for prostaglandins, which are involved in maintaining the body's normal inflammatory processes; but to do so effectively, supplements should have much larger quantities of EPA than DHA, as is the case here.
