Product Notes:
Shilajit can be thought of as the ultimate dehydrated food, produced by microorganisms in the soil distilling the core nutrients of mountain range plants into ultra-concentrated antioxidants and minerals that can be used by our bodies far more readily than fresh produce. It's long been a staple of Ayurvedic medicine as one of the most potent natural tonics, and its main active ingredient, fulvic acid, has been identified and embraced by western science, which now has thousands of studies on its benefits.
Geographically speaking, Shilajit (or 'mineral pitch') might be thought of as a plant version of bitumen that was formed by the breakdown of organic materials over the centuries in the Himalayan mountains, which seeps down over the rocks during the summer. (In fact, its original scientific name, Asphaltum punjabianum, was made when it was still thought to be derived from animal materials, until evidence emerged it was probably from cactus-like plants.) And although it's primarily been found in the Himalayas, it is also showing up in other mountain ranges, such as the Andes.
Health Canada has approved its usage as a natural health supplement not only for two of its traditional uses in Ayurvedic medicine as a Rasayana (rejuvenation) tonic or to help alleviate painful urination associated with UTIs, but also to help support testosterone levels in men between 45-55 years (both normal free and total testosterone levels).
That initial 'tonic' function is likely why even relatively healthy users attest shilajit can help increase their energy and improve their mood. But there are also many other contemporary studies of some more specific areas it or other humic and fulvic acid compounds (aka humifulvic compounds, or HFCs) may be able to help with, including: improving iron deficiency anemia; relieving chronic inflammatory conditions such as allergies or asthma; improving bone density in menopausal women; relieving altitude sickness; removing heavy metals (detoxifying); or even slowing the progression of Alzheimer's.
