Genuine Manuka Honey* contains a naturally occurring antibacterial agent called methylglyoxal (MGO) which only occurs in this particular type of honey. It's been shown to be effective against most forms of bacteria, including H. pylori (the stubborn bacteria behind many stomach ulcers) and Staphylococcus aureus (the most common cause of staph infections), which is why people not only consume it to help heal their stomach lining, but also use it topically to treat a variety of infections, wounds, and skin conditions.
* Just as genuine Champagne can only be made from grapes grown in that region of France with the wine processed in a certain way, genuine Manuka Honey is produced from the nectar of Leptospermum scoparium flowers which grow in select areas of New Zealand, and in order to be licensed to display the UMF™ quality trademark with a number identifying the product's strength (which Flora's new line bears), the source and quality of its production must be overseen by the Unique Mānuka Factor Honey Association, which entails independent lab testing for three key compounds to ensure it's real mānuka honey: Methylglyoxal (MGO), Leptosperin, and Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). The higher the UMF™ grading number, the higher the concentration of those three signature compounds.
This particular variety has the highest concentration of that key MGO ingredient in Flora's line, which ranges between MGO 30+ (which has at least 30 mg of MGO per kg) and this MGO 515+ (which has at least 515 mg per kg, which is similar to the 550 MGO strength of the Manuka Health Platinum grade Manuka Honey, which Flora used to distribute but which is no longer available in Canada)... with the intervening entries currently being 100+, 250+, and 400+.
