Licorice isn't just a flavouring for candies, teas, or medicines - it has many medical properties and purposes of its own, as well. It's long been used for a wide range of complaints, including: stomach distress and ulcers, inflammatory problems, arthritis, adrenal insufficiency, Addison’s disease, hypoglycemia, cirrhosis and liver damage, skin problems, rashes, dermatitis, impetigo, coughs and bronchial complaints, bacterial infections, constipation, and as a female tonic. Many of those uses are due to the fact that licorice contains the glycoside glycyrrhizin, which has a similar structure and activity as the steroids our adrenal glands produce naturally. That's why it's been used for mild Addison's disease and other adrenal insufficiencies such as hypoglycemia, and why it's been found to useful for arthritis and allergies, since it has an anti-inflammatory activity similar to cortisone's.
The number of uses for genuine licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) makes it one of the most unique herbal remedies available. It may have a positive effect on ailments from asthma, fatigue, and cold and flu symptoms, all the way to helping with baldness, dandruff, and may even aid in supporting those with immune conditions. Most commonly, however, licorice root is used as a natural expectorant, helping to remove mucus from the body through a process of liquefying it. Some also regard it as an effective antidepressant, which may come about from stimulating the adrenal gland to release more hydrocortisone.
