Product Notes:
Fragrance-Free, Dye-Free, Zero Waste Dish Washing Bars
Even when we're conscientious about recycling, plastics often just end up in the landfill anyway, in many regions. But we can do other things to reduce our environmental footprint, including selecting household products in formats like these which eliminate the need for plastic packaging altogether.
Change the Way You Do Dishes with Zero-Waste Soap
Most of us are familiar with solid or powdered soap for dishwashers (which use an inordinate amount of water and power), but have forgotten the pioneer days when bar soap was used for almost everything. These No Tox Life blocks of solid soap which quickly produce a rich, sudsy lather with just a little water (even hard water) hearken back to those days.
This mainly plant- (and partly mineral-) based natural soap is strong enough to remove stubborn grease and grime not only on dishes but also pots and pans, while still being gentle enough to be used with bare hands. (In fact, it even contains aloe vera to help your skin.) Nor do you need to worry about fragrance sensitivities: it's completely unscented and fragrance-free.
These items can last a long time: as noted on the paper sleeve around the bigger block, users have attested that a single 638 g block lasted some families as long as 9 conventional detergent bottles did. At about 1/4 of the size, that means the bars could last longer than 2 whole bottles. Of course, your usage and results may vary; the producers note you get more 'mileage' when using sponges and clothes than brushes (which tend to scrape off far more soap than is needed for an individual item).
CASA AGAVE Pot Scrubber Brush
A biodegradable CASA AGAVE Pot Scrubber Brush is also available, it's perfectly suited for use with these vegan dish soap blocks. Shaped like an old-school barber's shaving cream brush with a rounded doorknob style handle made of Moso bamboo, its bristles are made of agave fibres (a succulent plant resembling aloe vera or cactus plants).
The entire pot brush is about 7 cm high, with a 6 mm diameter of 2 cm long bristles, to start with, with the largest part of the upper knob of the handle being 4.5 cm in diameter.
Suggested Usage:
Rather than filling the whole sink with water and adding liquid detergent, the model here is simply to use a wet scrubbing brush, sponge, linen cloth, or other washing implement and dab or rub them on the block to take up a bit of soap for each item, and clean and rinse them individually. (After scraping any excess food or grease off the dish with a spatula, first.)
The developers recommend using this soap in conjunction with a wet eco-sponge to wash plates, bowls and cups, or a softer dish brush for cutlery or general dish washing. A stiffer brush or a scrubber or scourer is recommended for pots and pans. You can store the bar on a bamboo soap tray to keep it drained and dry between uses.
Of course, as a household soap, its uses are not confined to dishes. You can use it as spot-cleaner for stains on your laundry, carpet, or upholstery; or to wipe down your counters or other surfaces (including glass, stone, porcelain, and stainless steel surfaces); or to take labels off your jars or other recycling; or of course, to clean your sink.
CASA AGAVE Pot Scrubber Brush
Use in place of plastic dish brushes or scrubbers to remove stuck-on food or heavy stains or to clean pots and pans. To reduce cracks developing in the handle, keep the wood parts dry, and do not soak or submerge the handle (but if you do regularly submerge your dish brush in water, try applying a vegetable oil to the handle). Place the brush in a dry spot after using it. You may also want to dip the bristles in vinegar occasionally, to help kill bacteria. Each brush can be used for up to 6 months, until the bristles become so worn they no longer work effectively. After that, it can either be composted; buried in the garden; or disposed of in a green waste bin, if you have such a service in your area.
