Product Notes:
Premium Digestive Enzyme
Bromelain, the "proteolytic" enzyme which breaks down proteins, evidently comes from pineapples, so couldn't you just get it from pineapples? Probably not, unless you lived in a tropical region with steady access to fresh produce, and even then, you'd have to eat a whole lot of it every day to get the equivalent of this supplement.
That's because the bromelain is mostly in the parts we don't eat: the stem and central core; and even though this potent enzyme can retain its efficacy up to 60˚C, pineapples generally get heated above that point before they get canned in order to neutralize the bromelain, to make the remainder taste sweeter.
Ingredients:
Each capsule contains:
500 mg Bromelain (Ananas comosus var. comosus - stem); at a strength of 18,000,000 FCC Papain Units per capsule, or 2,400 GDU per gram
Non-medicinal ingredients: Hypromellose (capsule shell), magnesium stearate.
Contains no: Eggs, Wheat, Soy, Gluten, or Dairy.
GDU = Gelatin Dissolving Units, with one GDU being the amount of enzyme that will liberate 1 mg of amino nitrogen from a standard gelatin solution at a pH level between 4.5 and 5.5 after 20 minutes digestion at 45˚C.
An FCC Papain Unit refers to the quantity of enzyme that can liberate the equivalent of 1 microgram of tyrosine per hour when hydrolyzing or breaking down a casein substrate at pH 6.0 and 40° C.
