Product Notes:

Green Bananas

Many of us almost instinctively avoid eating green bananas, since they're not only harder to peel and not as sweet as ripe ones, but also harder to digest. But once we realize why unripe bananas might cause a bit of stomach ache if we eat a whole one, that turns out to be more of a feature than a bug, especially when they're transformed to a powdered form with a much longer shelf life like this, which we can take in more measured doses.

Green bananas have a relatively high amount of essentially indigestible dietary fibres which can't be broken down into component sugars like regular starches can, but can help sustain the healthy bacteria in our gastro-intestinal tract, which helps promote regularity and supports the immune system, plus it can also help reduce insulin resistance and regulate blood glucose levels.

Of course, those benefits can only really occur if you do not subject this flour to higher temperatures (which would have the same effect as ripening: the starch would transform into a less resistant type which can be broken down to be absorbed as sugars) . But if you're gluten sensitive/intolerant or have Celiac disease and want another arrow in your quiver of gluten- and grain-free flours to prepare meals with, you may be pleasantly surprised by the way resistant starch can improve the texture of your baking or cooking without affecting the taste.

Ingredients:

Organic Green Banana Flour

The bananas are harvested before they ripening, while still much higher in prebiotic inulin and resistant starch. The green bananas are then washed, peeled, sliced, and dehydrated before being ground up into a flour.

Gluten-free. Grain-free. Non-GMO. Eco-Cert. USDA Organic. Kosher.

Suggested Usage:

You can add flavourless organic green banana powder to any cold or room-temperature beverage, including juice, water, smoothies, or shakes, or stir it into your oatmeal or other cereal after it's prepared.

Please note, to function as a prebiotic, it should not be added to piping hot beverages or foods or used in ordinary cooking or baking, since it loses effectiveness when heated to 60°C or above.

Introducing large amounts of prebiotics to your diet too quickly can be associated with bloating, gas, and discomfort, so you may want to begin gradually: starting with about a teaspoon a day for the first week or so, then consume two-teaspoons a daily for the next week, until you're good with a full tablespoon a day. Supplementing with more than 30 grams a day is not recommended.

To use as a plant-based gluten-free flour in cooking or baking, be advised, you can use about one-fifth less than other types of flour you might be substituting it for.

Store in a cool dry place.

Warnings:

Some users might experience increased gas and bloating during the first week or so if you start with a full 10 gram daily standard dose, so you may want to start with one-third that amount.

Allergy Statement: This flour is packaged in a facility that also handles tree nuts and sesame.
