Hawthorn - a thorny shrub in the rose family - has been used in Herbal Medicine for a very long time to help maintain and/or support cardiovascular health in adults. Product Notes:

A versatile plant, Hawthorn has been used as support for a variety of heart-related issues for millennia, including chest pain, irregular heartbeat, heart failure, and more recently (as these conditions came to be understood more), high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries.

Modern studies show it contains antioxidant flavonoids including OPCs (oligomeric procyanidins, which are also in grapes/red wine), which may be able to improve blood flow and help dilate blood vessels and protect them from damage; and proanthocyanidin, which also relaxes blood vessels, which can lower blood pressure.

Reportedly, hawthorn can be quite useful in easing the pain from angina and in facilitating exercise and recovery from heart attacks, by reducing symptoms brought on by exertion, such as palpitations, breathing problems, and fatigue.

Hawthorn is still widely used in Europe by those with the initial stages of heart failure, and a systematic review of studies on it as an adjunct to other treatments found it could reduce shortness of breath and fatigue, enhance the heart's ability to use oxygen, and improve the heart's maximum workload and ability to tolerate exercise.

A 2022 review of the scientific literature by Nawrot et al. concludes that the anthocyanins in hawthorn fruit have a real affinity for the heart muscle, and are able to actually strengthen the force of cardiac muscle contraction (inotropic effect +), both by directly stimulating of receptors and by improving the energy metabolism in the heart muscle, while also stabilizing its rhythm. Similarly, some herbalists maintain that the berries are specifically indicated to support the structure of the heart muscle, while the leaves and flowers do more to support its function (regulating the heartbeat).  Hence, it is worth noting that this formula also contains 165 mg of powder from the hawthorn berries in each capsule, in addition to the 300 mg of extract from the flowers and leaves.
