Selenium is an essential trace mineral whose main function in the human body is to serve as an antioxidant, not only in the thyroid gland, where it is primarily concentrated and where it also helps synthesize thyroid hormones, but also throughout the body (and brain), since it's a cofactor for glutathione activity, and it also helps protects immune cells.

Product Notes:

For those who may need to correct a selenium deficiency due to a dietary or health disorder or who are seeking it as protective factor for conditions like atherosclerosis, hypercholesterolemia, type 1 diabetes mellitus, and phenylketonuria (PKU), Pure Encapsulation presents it here in a high dosage of its naturally occurring organic, more readily absorbed form: selenomethionine, where it is bonded to an amino acid, as it is in foods like Brazil nuts, cereal grains, soybeans, and grassland legumes.

Although it's present in many foods and we only need very small amounts of it, some conditions can impede its absorption, and deficiencies have been linked to a number of serious conditions. Some of the populations that are sometimes advised to take it on a supplementary basis include people with HIV or Crohn's disease or who have been fed intravenously, and pregnant women, to decrease the risks of developing preeclampsia (a serious blood pressure condition) and of premature or smaller than expected deliveries.

This type differs from many Selenium supplements not only for its purity (with no additional binding ingredients which might impede its absorption, as may occur with tablets), but also for the fact that it is not contra-indicated for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
