Product Notes:
Vitamin B-12 helps maintain and produce red blood cells and can help prevent the related condition known as megaloblastic anemia which can make people tired and weak. It is also needed to be able to metabolize carbohydrates, fats and protein normally (partly by serving as a cofactor for certain enzymes to convert some types of fatty acids and BCAAs (branched chain amino acids) into a citric acid), and to help synthesize DNA, methionine, and normal myelin in the nervous system.
In addition, B12, along with two other B vitamins, B6 and folic acid, is also needed to maintain normal plasma homocysteine levels to help prevent strokes. It's even been shown to help with canker sores or mouth ulcers (formally known as Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis), and some types of pain and/or disability (specifically, low back pain and neuralgia).
Last but not least, some studies indicate supplementing with Vitamin B-12 may be able to delay the onset of depression and improve the efficacy of anti-depressants when used in conjunction with them.
Deficiencies can be related to diet, or if the ability to absorb has been impaired by illness or medication – the elderly and strict vegetarians may be particularly at risk.
