Info: Replacement Particle+Carbon Filter for Blue Pure 411, 411+ or 411 Auto; Available in Two Types (Standard - in sets of 3; or SmokeBlock)

This is the main combination 'sandwich' filter from the original manufacturer designed to remove small particles, odors, and gaseous pollutants from Blueair's 411 family of Blue Pure machines. This primary filter is compatible with all three 411 models: the original Blue Pure 411; the 411+/411 Plus; and the 411 Auto. Or for additional protection against wildfire smoke or strong cooking or pet odors, try the new Blueair SmokeBlock filters, whose smoke- and odor-eating sheet of activated carbon in the middle is much denser (it has more particles per inch, or PPI).

Product Notes:

New packaging for Blue Pure 411 particle + carbon filter

The BLUE Pure 411 Series (which now includes the 411, the 411+, and 411 AUTO) from Blueair uses two types of filters:

* the main 2-in-1 Particle + Carbon Filter common to all three 411 models, which combines a particle filter to capture contaminants as small as 1 micron with an odor-eating activated carbon sheet inside that to reduce gaseous pollutants and odors (note, this filter is now sold in a plain box style); and,

* a prefilter made of stretchy fabric to trap larger particles such as dust or pet hair, which comes in a variety of colours to fit in with many décors, and is made in two main series (one for the 411 and 411+, and one for the 411 Auto).

This main filter is designed to remove a wide variety of pollutants and irritants including bacteria, dust, mold spores, pollen, and pet dander, as well as light airborne chemicals, gases, and cooking odors, using a combination of particle and activated carbon filters. This same filter can used by both the original 411 and the subsequent 411+ model, as well as by the 411 Auto and a completely different earlier model called the Blueair MINI.

Or, for those who live in areas subject to - or downwind from - wildfires or smog, Blueair has developed a new line of Blueair SmokeBlock filters for all three Blue series, which have a thicker layer of activated carbon (produced from coconut shells) in the middle. These are capable of removing up to 99.99% of wildfire smoke, and can provide extra protection against other wildfire emissions such as toxic gasses and is also much more effective against household odours.

How to Change the Main Filter

When your unit notifies you it's time to replace your filter after about six months of use (via a colour change on the speed indicator lights on top), it's not hard to do.

On the original 411 model, as shown in this video starting at about the 3 minute mark, you simply have to push down slightly on the top portion of the air purifier and turn it counterclockwise to remove the head; peel off the fabric prefilter; lift off the plastic filter retaining ring; hold the tabs on top of the old main filter and lift it off the plastic frame it fits around ... and then reverse that process using the new filter. It's a similar procedure for the 411 Auto (except for that one you may have to first unfasten the Velcro pocket on the prefilter at the back of the machine to liberate the power cord).

On the 411+ model, it's a bit different: you actually need turn the air purifier upside down to change it from the bottom. Once again, you simply turn the cap there counterclockwise and remove it to access the old filter; you remove the prefilter, take out the old filter, vacuum away any dust you might see there on the inside, and then open up and insert the replacement filter inside the metal grill, and replace the prefilter and the cap. There are more detailed instructions and a diagram taken from the User Manual for this, below.

(Of course, you need to unplug the unit first, in both cases.)

Directions for replacing main filter in Blueair Blue Pure 411 Plus

Directions for Changing Main Filter on the 411 Plus:

1) When the indicator lights turn red (typically after 6 months of continuous operation) it is recommended that you change the main filter.

2) Turn off the unit and unplug it.

3) Remove the prefilter from the unit's metal frame.

4) Carefully place the unit upside down on a flat surface and open the bottom lid by rotating it counter-clockwise while holding another part of the unit.

5) Remove that opened bottom lid.

6) Grip the two handles/flaps on the main filter and pull upwards to remove it from the unit.

7) Open up / unfold the new main filter into a cylindrical shape and position it into the metal frame. Ensure that it retains that cylindrical shape by pressing it against the metal frame from inside the unit.

8) Replace the bottom lid by gently pushing it down and simultaneously rotating it clockwise to secure it back into the bayonet lock.

9) Turn the unit back into its correct upright position, and place on the floor in an appropriate location for operation (away from sources of heat, no closer than 10cm/4" to other objects, and where air can circulate freely).

10) Plug it back in and turn on the 411+ unit.

11) Press the button on top of the unit and hold for 5 seconds to reset the filter replacement timer. (This lets the unit know you have changed the filter.) The indicator light should flash 3 times, and then change from red to white.

Naming Note; The Blueair 411+/411 Plus is also known as the JOY S in international markets, and the Blueair 411 Auto is also marketed as the Blue 3210.
