Product Notes:
Historical and Main Contemporary Uses:
The indigenous people of Australia have used emu oil for centuries if not thousands of years for a variety of skin and muscle or joint conditions, massaging into the skin to promote healing of sun dried skin and bruises and burns, among other things. Because its composition is quite similar to our own skin and does not contain any phospholipids, it is able to penetrate the skin more quickly and much deeper than other types of oils, to moisturize, heal, and address inflammation.
Daily use will hydrate, nourish and soften the skin and may provide an effective treatment for various isolated skin conditions such as eczema or dry or inflamed skin. It's even gentle and safe enough to use on babies.
Other Uses:
A natural UV Sunblock: Although it should not be considered a substitute for a broad spectrum sunscreen on high UV-index days, Emu Oil does provide some degree of protection from the sun when applied before going outdoors; one source reports having tested a particular type and finding it to have a natural sun factor of SPF8. Emu Oil is sometimes added to sunscreens to enhance their effects, and can be applied prior to applying a sunscreen.
An effective repellent for some types of bugs (but not for mosquitoes): Emu Oil contains terpenes, natural substances which repel certain types of insects, particularly adult head lice, cockroaches, and triatomine bugs ("Kissing bugs").
