They say sitting is the new smoking, when we consider the cumulative health impacts of an almost completely sedentary versus a more active lifestyle. Or maybe your job does require you to stand all day on a hard and/or sometimes wet or slippery floor, and that's hard on your feet and joints. Either way, a soft, cushioning mat with a tough, durable, water-resistant and easily washable cover may be just what the doctor ordered to help ease your aches and pains and improve your posture and energy levels.

Available in a Choice of Sizes and Thicknesses

The mats offered here all feature the same type of soft, springy material with a trampoline effect in their cores that's used in kybun's 'walk-on-air' footwear, and the same type of covers, which have a special rubber coating to make them water resistant and easy to clean. But they come in several different depths and shapes.

The thickest versions are 6 cm (or 2-3/8") deep, which have the highest rebound effect. These are most suitable for those who do not have major health, balance, or musculature issues at the outset who will be able to quickly adapt to and benefit from a more dynamic way of standing without losing your balance. (For more detail on those health benefits, please see the related kybun Mat With Fabric Cover, or 'Mode of Operation' below.)

They come in two sizes and shapes here:

- a rectangular one that's nearly a meter (almost 38 inches) long and their standard 46 centimeters (18 inches) wide, which is probably not only big enough for working at a counter or standing desks where you might need to be moving a few feet from side to side during the course of your day, but also for kneeling or sitting and stretching out on to do some floor exercises on; and,

- a smaller one, that's not as long (at 80 cm or 31-1/2 inches), but is a little wider (at 60 cm or nearly two feet wide), and has beveled edges or sloped sides. This 'Pyramid' style is designed to reduce the risk of accidentally shifting completely off the edge of the mat and falling.

Please note, kybun advises that you should not wear shoes while using a 6 centimeter thick mat, because the combination of shoes and that amount of springy material can destabilize the ankle joints. Rather, you should only wear socks, or go barefoot, if you can.

For those who may find the full 6 cm depth version a little too challenging, there is a 4 cm option: about an inch and a half thick. This may be more suitable for those with certain injuries or equilibrium, balance, or dizziness problems, as well as for senior citizens or children. Mats of this depth can provide a gentle, mid-level workout, but it's still recommended that you only use bare feet or socks rather than shoes on them to reduce the strain on your ankles. The one being offered here comes in a smaller square size, but we can also

Finally, the 2 cm (about 3/4") thick Plus model is ideal if you spend long periods at work or home standing on a hard surface such as a concrete or tile floor, and you're generally required to wear shoes.

Potentially suitable settings might include a workshop or factory that requires steel-toed safety shoes at a workbench or assembly line; or behind the counter in a restaurant or bar, or in a more formal bank, office, or sales setting that requires long periods of standing.

Even with just a 2 cm thickness, the soft, springy kyBounder (the original name for these mats) can relieve the strain on your whole body, protect your joints, and prevent leg fatigue, especially when you do a few basic exercises throughout the course of the day.

Kybun mats are made in and shipped to us from Switzerland. Delivery may take up to a few weeks, as not all available product combinations are in stock at all times.

Suggested Usage:

Kybun mats are not only extremely well-suited to working behind standing desks, counters, or workbenches,  but also for home uses, for multi-tasking while doing things like ironing, talking on the phone, or during screen time.

Composition:

Core: 100% polyurethane, with an open-celled, breathable pore structure.

Cover: PVC (polyvinyl chloride) coating, heat-sealed water tight at the bottom.

Care Instructions:

Although these mats repel liquids, they should not be immersed in water or be exposed to permanently wet conditions, or subjected to aggressive fluids or chemcials. They are also not impervious to being punctured by sharp items or (hot) swarf (such as metal shavings in a machine shop).

The outer material can usually be cleaned simply with water and neutral soap, or with the types of hydro-alcoholic solutions (denatured alcohol and water) available in supermarkets, with the usual degreasing agents based on alcohol, water, or neutral soaps. Never use surface cleaning agents such as toluene, DMF, acetone, ketone, turpentine, benzene, or diesel, etc. which could mar the cover surface.

The material inside the kybun mat has been manufactured and optimized for its exceptional characteristics: linear, elastic and resilient behavior, high and fast springback, and slow material fatigue, even under everyday exposure.

When used for 8 hours/day at normal weight (BMI 18-25) and with good care, its average durability is approximately 2 years. For every 10% above normal weight, these values decrease by about 10%, or by about 50% for every 50% above normal weight.

standing on a kybun Pyramid mat

Hello and welcome to our video about the kybun Pyramid mat. In this video, I will be explaining why it makes sense to use the kybun mat and describing the health benefits of the elastic, springy mat.

Before I do that, however, I need to digress slightly. Our bodies are designed to be moved regularly in order to function efficiently and stay healthy. It was not uncommon for our ancestors to walk up to 20 km a day. Especially in their search for food and water. Walking, climbing, crawling, stretching, etc. were all part of their everyday lives.

Nowadays, we generally move between 800 m and 1500 m a day. We have adopted a sedentary lifestyle. Take a few minutes to consider what your average day looks like. Most people sit more than they move: In the morning when having breakfast. On a bus or train or in the car on the way to work. Quite often for eight hours at work. When having lunch. On the way home from work. When having dinner. And, of course, when relaxing in front of the TV in the evening. We are sitting ourselves to death.

At kybun, we want to put healthy movement back into your life with the kybun mat, thereby reducing, eliminating or ideally preventing harmful tension and pain in the musculoskeletal system.

You are probably asking yourself why is sitting down so bad and why do I need a kybun mat for standing up. It is not merely enough to just stand? There are a number of reasons why you should definitely reduce the number of hours spent sitting down, why standing on hard, flat surfaces does not deliver the desired benefits in the long term and why it makes obvious sense to use the elastic, springy kybun mat when standing.

Excessive sitting and static standing boast numerous disadvantages. Due to the lack of movement, the muscles in the entire musculoskeletal system, which play an important supporting role in our bodies, start to weaken and waste away. Further, insufficient movement can cause adhesions and tension in the myofascial structure, which often result in pain. A common problem that arises from sitting too much is a shortening of the hip flexors.

Static sitting and standing also increases the pressure applied to the feet, knees, hips and intervertebral discs, as there is no alternation between loading and unloading. Moreover, a lack of movement can lead to circulatory disorders, as veno-muscular pumps are not activated when the body is not moving. It is also well known that a lack of movement can lead to cardiovascular diseases. Sitting, in particular, can, due to the non-physiological and static posture, result in back, shoulder and neck tension.

I could continue with this lengthy list of disadvantages of a static lifestyle. But instead, I would now like to present the solution to this problem, the kybun mat.

Due to the unique material properties of the kybun mat, the body is encouraged into constant, minute movements.

This promotion of movement has numerous positive effects on our health. The deep muscles are activated and strengthened, since the feet can move freely in all directions on the kybun mat and the body needs to constantly maintain its balance and posture.

This moderate amount of movement activates the veno-muscular pumps, thus promoting the circulation of blood through the body and protecting against circulatory disorders. Minute movement of the whole body on the kybun mat activates muscular tension. This increased muscular tension keeps your body upright and protects against incorrect and excessive strain.

In addition, the rebound effect of the kybun mat transfers the vibrations to the myofascial structures, which can relieve tension and blockages. Further, by sinking deep into the elastic, springy material, your feet are fully surrounded by this unique mat. This immediately leads to optimised pressure distribution of the feet, which in turn significantly increases the time spent standing without your feet starting to ache after just a few minutes.

Your knee and hip joints as well as your back will also benefit from this optimised pressure distribution and the constant minute movements. This results in alternation between loading and unloading, which greatly reduces the actual acting forces. Standing statically, causes a sustained load, which can quickly lead to pain. And remember, it also helps to train and improve your balance and posture. The constant movements further benefit sensorimotor areas of your body, which can lead to a vast improvement in coordinative skills.

A small change in your everyday life can make all the difference and provides numerous health benefits. We recommend: Going from passive sitting to active standing with the kybun mat.
