Glutamine (or L-glutamine) is not only the most abundant amino acid synthesized in the human body, but it also plays a critical role in the growth and development of the immune system, maintaining muscle mass and muscle growth, regulating pH balance, as well as being a nitrogen transporter that influences protein metabolism.
Glutamine aids in the digestive process by protecting the mucosal lining of the stomach and the intestines which may aid individuals with leaky gut syndrome, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease and other gastrointestinal disorders. Glutamine is also considered a "conditionally essential" amino acid as during certain periods of stress, the body may need more glutamine than it is able to produce naturally; therefore making glutamine an appropriate candidate for supplementation.
