LipoFlavonoid – Supplement Evaluation

Lipo-Flavonoid is frequently recommended by some health practitioners as a natural product to help alleviate tinnitus symptoms; however, I have not seen any published clinical trials that support this practice. Similarly, Lipo-Flavonoid is also recommended in some cases to treat ear infections and vertigo, but based on the ingredients I do not see how this particular formula could be effective. Vertigo is often related to Meniere’s disease. There are specific products that I do recommend for vertigo, including Vertigoheel from Heel. I also have a separate article available discussing tinnitus for those interested in a natural approach.

Lipo-Flavonoid Supplement Overview

Main Ingredients (three caplets contain):

Other ingredients: Dibasic calcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, stearic acid, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, pharmaceutical glaze, polyethylene glycol, silica, titanium dioxide, ethyl vanillin, FD&C yellow#6 (sunset yellow), FD&C red#40 lake, FD&C blue#1 lake.

Analysis

Lipo-Flavonoid contains minuscule quantities of standard B vitamins. Higher levels can be found in any low cost vitamin, with the exception of the following supplemental nutrients. The level of B vitamins in this supplement are far too low to provide a physiological benefit. The main ingredients are choline, inositol, bioflavonoids, and vitamin C.

Cautionary Comment: I do not promote or recommend nutritional supplements that contain artificial colours like those found in this formula.

Possible Benefits of Lemon Bioflanonoids for Tinnitus

There are some studies indicating that eriodictyol glycoside, a natural component found in lemon bioflavonoids, may provide benefits to those with tinnitus and Meniere’s by blocking inner ear histamine production. Quercetin is the most important natural product for blocking histamine production, personally I recommend Quercetin Bioflavonoid Complex developed by New Roots.

The supplements listed below will provide the same ingredients found in Lipo-Flavonoid, but at higher potencies, so the results should be superior. Incorporating Vertigoheel, magnesium, and other supplements, along with daily ear massage may provide additional benefits as well.

Dietary Supplement Recommendations

Multivitamin

A quality multivitamin should be taken with each meal. Ask an Aviva Advisor for recommendations. Our best products are from Douglas Laboratories and Pure Encapsulations. All our recommendations will have higher levels of all the B vitamins and vitamin C found in the Lipo-Flavonoid formula, which only has 100 mg of vitamin C per tablet.

Douglas Labs Ultra Preventive X contains 175 mg of vitamin C per tablet. Four per day provides 700 mg. Eight per day, 1400 mg. Douglas Labs Ultra Balance III tablets contain 200mg vitamin C per tablet. Three per day = 600mg, 6 per day = 1200 mg vitamin C.

Lipotropic Supplement: NOW Choline/Inositol

250mg choline, and 250mg inositol per capsule.

New Roots Quercetin Bioflavonoid Complex

Provides 250mg of quercetin, and 250mg bioflavonoids per capsule.

Pycnogenol

Derived from French maritime pine bark, pycnogenol has been shown to be one of the most effective supplements for the treatment of tinnitus. By improving endothelial function and boosting nitric oxide, there are a variety of additional health benefits.

Nitric Oxide Boosting Supplements

By combining nitric oxide boosting supplements with pycnogenol, even better results can be achieved by significantly improving circulation. Recommendations include:

While Lipo-Flavonoid may prove to be helpful for tinnitus, I have prepared a document that outlines many of the supplements and nutrients for the successful treatment of tinnitus. I believe that the recommendations above may be helpful and should provide better results than LipoFlavonoid.
